Policy for Anti-radicalization and Extremism
As an institute, we are committed to enabling growth through education without discrimination. NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF ADVANCED TECHNICAL & MANAGEMENT STUDIES (NIATM) believes that everyone has equal rights to educate, enhance skills and competence, and upgrade knowledge; hence NIATM follows the principles of equality in true words and spirit.
NIATM will continue to endeavor to ensure equal opportunities and rights so that everyone gets benefits with no differentiation or distinction based on any factor except in cases involving special categories of students, professionals, or business associates having limitations that hinder their scope and potential to progress and prosper, or special circumstances and/or situations beyond the control of the learner or the institute.
We ensure that NIATM and its approved or associated centres follow the Anti-radicalization and Extremism Policy and comply with all applicable laws, institutional responsibilities, and safeguarding expectations relevant to the institute. We also ensure our commitment to identify potential safeguarding issues and clearly set out how NIATM and its authorized centres will deal with such incidents and protect people.
Radicalization is a process through which a person may become involved in extremist activities or terrorism, moving from having no particularly strong opinions or being a moderate person toward holding extremist views. It can happen online, through meetings, conversations, or gradual influence over time.
Extremism refers to vocal or active opposition to fundamental democratic values, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect and tolerance of different faiths and beliefs. It may also include support for violence or harm motivated by ideological, political, or religious causes.
Terrorism means the use or threat of action that involves serious damage to property, endangers a person’s life, creates serious risk to health and safety of the public or a section of the public, or is designed to seriously interfere with or disrupt an electronic system. Such use or threat is made for the purpose of influencing a government or intimidating the public in support of a political, religious, or ideological cause.
Prevention means reducing or eliminating the risk of individuals becoming involved in terrorism, radicalization, or extremist activities.
This policy will be applicable to:
This policy will have the following major compliance segments:
NIATM and its associates ensure that appropriate risk assessment measures are created to minimize the risk of anyone becoming radicalized, intolerant of other people’s faiths and beliefs, or exposed to extremist views to the point where they may support or threaten harmful action against persons, property, or society.
The following indicators in learners or people may help identify the risk of being radicalized or exposed to extremist views:
This may arise due to factors such as:
This may also arise due to broader external circumstances such as:
It is the responsibility of NIATM, its centres, and its associates to support the government, society, and learners by identifying and reporting such risks. Early intervention is vital to protect people and other learners. We believe it is important to intervene to protect learners, vulnerable persons, and all those at risk.
Reporting such risk can help prevent serious damage that may be caused to a learner, a group of learners, people, or society.
Such incidents or concerns should be reported to a senior member of the organization, which may include a department head, centre head, or a governing body member of the organization.
Considering the sensitivity of this policy, such incidents may also be reported directly to the head of the organization or through official institutional safeguarding or reporting channels.
Once a concern is reported to the organization or centre, the reporting authority must identify the facts behind the report. If the report is found to be credible and indicates a potential risk of extremism or radicalization, it must be reported to the appropriate local authority or competent authority immediately, in accordance with applicable law and institutional safeguarding procedures.
In such cases, the relevant Whistle Blower Policy and any applicable Safeguarding or Vulnerable Persons policy should also be followed to protect the reporter of the incident as well as the potential victim or affected individuals.
NIATM ensures that its staff and centres are trained to identify risk according to this policy. NIATM also ensures that centres offer sufficient and periodic training to staff members on this policy.
The training should ensure that staff members are aware of:
Staff members should also be encouraged to engage with relevant safeguarding and awareness materials issued by competent authorities wherever applicable.
This policy will be reviewed bi-annually or earlier if required by institutional need, legal change, safeguarding concern, or policy amendment.
